Design Workshop
Statement of Intent Summary
Our design philosophy is multifaceted and simple—harvest untold stories through a rich engagement process to make a place for everyone.
Philadelphia's history is punctuated by community-driven innovation, and this project extends that lineage through the following principles:
- Honor Identity, Culture and History;
- Enhance Pedestrian Comfort, Traffic and Mobility;
- Integrate Democratic Design and Inclusive Programming;
- Create a Resilient Environment Driven by Performance; and
- Build for Economic Sustainability.
In our conversations with Philadelphians, one thing is clear—this place is for people, not vehicles. Our approach offers a realistic framework for transitioning the parkway into gardens using strategic moves.
Primarily, the Parkway needs an enhanced pedestrian experience. We propose directing vehicles to the street grid and disconnecting from Interstate-676. Secondly, we propose turning the park inside out, with art and education at its center. Thirdly, the park will become a series of gardens that are programmed to provide a balanced, continuous attraction. These gardens will promote sustainable, performance-based landscapes and celebrate Philadelphia’s rich horticultural heritage. Finally, there is a need to access the River and reinstate the design intent of Logan Square.
We envision the transformation of Parkway to Park: The Evolution of Philadelphia’s Garden.
